My Artist's Statements

For those of you that are interested, here is my artist's statement:

“Men are rewarded for learning the practice of violence in virtually any sphere of activity by money, admiration, recognition, respect, and the genuflection of others honoring their sacred and proven masculinity. In male culture, police are heroic and so are outlaws; males who enforce standards are heroic and so are those who violate them.”
- Andrea Dworkin

I am fascinated by 1950’s post-WWII men’s adventure magazines. These pulp novels are filled with images that drip with patriotism, ruggedness and animalistic masculinity. For this project I have attempted to recapture these moments of heightened drama through a series of photographs, nine images of myself placed into the context of manly men who fear nothing and always end up as champions. Like the title suggests, these images question the essence of masculinity, pushing against formulaic and hackneyed ideas regarding the macho character with today’s male figure and seeing how the two personas interact with each other.
